Our Purpose

Truth, Goodness & Beauty

Our purpose is to cultivate the hearts and minds of students in pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. We seek truth in the sciences and math, goodness in the characters of the classics read. We see boundless beauty in the fine arts, patterns of math, design of the universe, and eloquence of language. As we learn and immerse ourselves, we begin to understand what it means to really be human.

We believe a classical liberal arts curriculum sparks a child’s natural sense of wonder and curiosity of the world around them. Asking why is encouraged in order to develop independent thinking liberating the mind and heart. Learn about our philosophical pillars.

Parents and guardians serve an integral role in the education of their children, facilitating their learning while being supported by our dedicated faculty. With engaging classes, relevant independent work, and community building opportunities to meet in person, Great Hearts Online is a revolutionary school at home choice.

Truth

Verum

We believe that Truth exists, and we must seek it relentlessly by disciplined study and good-willed conversation.

Millet's The Angelus: two field workers pausing in prayer at dusk

Goodness

Bonum

Liberal education consists of cognitive, emotional, and moral education—thinking deeply, loving noble things, and living well together. We believe, with Plato, that the highest goal of education is to become good, intellectually, and morally.

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring

Beauty

Pulchrum

We believe that beauty is not merely in the eye of the beholder, and that the classic forms and works of Western music, drama, and visual art should play the central role in forming aesthetic judgment.

The School Day

A Scholar’s Hours

We focus on virtues in all areas of learning whether it’s discussing the goodness of characters in a classical book or discovering truth in the patterns of math. Here’s a peek into the daily life of a Great Hearts Online scholar. It’s a new approach to schooling that offers structure, freedom, and balance for the entire family.

  • Morning

Live Zoom classes — teacher-led, live virtual classes Monday through Thursday with consistent faculty and classmates.

  • Afternoon

Independent coursework — daily independent assignments are completed in the afternoons and on Fridays then due the next morning.

  • Throughout

Access to teachers for tutoring and office hours. Teacher work hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM.

  • K–3 Reading

K–3 scholars in both models attend live virtual reading groups two to four times per week.

Live Learning Model

Teacher-led, live virtual classes Monday through Thursday with consistent faculty and classmates. Independent work is completed in the afternoons and on Fridays.

Best for families who value learning in community, interactive instructional time, live discussions and classroom engagement, and/or want a more traditional classroom experience virtually.

Flex Learning Model

Course content via instructional videos and self-paced asynchronous assignments; assignments due at the end of each course rather than daily.

Best for independent scholars and families who value self-paced flexibility over live instruction and can dedicate significant time to supporting their child’s education.

The Method

The Three Roads — Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric

Trivium is a Latin word that translates to “the place where three roads meet”. The trivium includes the three phases of classical education: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. The classical method was born in ancient Greece and Rome, and by the 16th century, it was used throughout the Western world.

Raphael, The School of Athens (detail) — Plato and Aristotle

Grammar — Grades K–5

During the Grammar phase (elementary), children are naturally drawn to memorization. Classically educated children learn the factual foundation of each subject, instilled through songs, chants, and rhymes to help children enjoy the learning experience.

Logic — Grades 6–8

The Logic phase involves ordering facts into organized statements for deeper understanding. Scholars are taught to argue reasonably, civilly, and articulately. Practice in making written and oral arguments helps to further develop these skills.

Rhetoric — Grades 9–12

In the Rhetoric phase, scholars learn the art of thinking and articulating concepts to others; to communicate well; to persuade. Scholars also become perceptive and discerning listeners.

The Nine Virtues

The Nine Virtues

Great Hearts focuses on the whole child: mind and heart. Our classical curriculum is rooted in nine virtues woven into every subject and discussed in class.

Responsibility Perseverance Integrity Honesty Courage Citizenship Humility Friendship Wisdom

Great Hearts academies do not deploy a “character curriculum.” Students are formed by the culture of the school, implied and explicit, and each student’s choices to lead within it.

Voices of Families

What led us to Great Hearts, specifically, was my children’s academic needs. I have 3 children that are dyslexic. As a mom, seeing them get the service they need is amazing. They have excelled. Great Hearts Online gives you everything you need and then some.

Kristin Banyon — Great Hearts Online Family

Great Hearts Online has been revolutionary for my family. We had always wanted to homeschool but felt overwhelmed by the idea of carrying the load alone. This program is the perfect blend of rigorous and rich education combined with the nurturing environment of at home learning. We love GHO!

Erica McQuown — Great Hearts Online Family

The educational community is phenomenal. Our kids’ teachers connected with our children and motivated them toward academic excellence in a way that we as parents could not. Our children also enjoyed the daily camaraderie of the online classroom experience. Simply put, our family thrives because we became part of a like-minded educational community not otherwise available in our town.

Jonathon Hornok — Great Hearts Online Family

“We have a strong Special Education team, provide services as indicated in the IEPs, serve students with 504 plans and our English Language learners.”
